Esprit Ltr Project 8144 { Lydia Load Balancing and G-networks: Design, Implementation and Evaluation

We propose, design, implement and test a prototype for load balancing in distributed systems. It is based on ideas from a new analytical model, the multiclass G-Network with triggered customer movement, which is used to model strategies for load balancing. We summarize the new results on \product form networks" which extend the analytical formulas previously derived for multiclass networks 19] to the case of triggered customer movement. The experimental system is instrumented, and loaded with an artiicial work-load generator. Predictions from the analytical model, and measurements from the prototype with an artiicial workload, are given and compared under similar circumstances and show good general agreement.
